PayNest Calculation Methodology

Our tools use published formulas and clearly stated assumptions so you can understand how each estimate is produced.

Salary calculations

Annual salary is calculated as hourly wage × hours worked per week × weeks worked per year. Weekly income equals hourly wage × weekly hours. Monthly income equals annual income ÷ 12. Biweekly income generally equals weekly income × 2, and the standard daily estimate divides weekly income by five workdays.

Hourly wage × weekly hours × working weeks = annual salary

Rent affordability calculations

30% income guideline

The recommended rent benchmark equals gross monthly income × 30%. This is a general planning guideline and does not account for every household expense.

3x monthly rent rule

The monthly income requirement equals monthly rent × 3. Annualizing that amount multiplies it by 12.

40x annual income rule

The annual income requirement equals monthly rent × 40. This landlord screening convention is more conservative than the 3x monthly rule.

Calculation assumptions

Unless a user enters different values, hourly examples assume 40 hours per week, 52 paid weeks per year, five workdays per week, and gross pay before taxes or deductions. Rent results use gross income and exclude utilities, insurance, debt, and location-specific costs.

Update policy

We review calculation logic when formulas, product features, or common planning conventions change. Material methodology changes are documented on this page. Content pages may also be revised to improve clarity and correct errors.

Data accuracy approach

PayNest favors deterministic formulas over opaque estimates. We test representative inputs, use consistent rounding for display, and distinguish general guidelines from guarantees. Users should verify important decisions with pay records, lease criteria, local costs, and qualified professionals.
